Tried It: Sugar, Sugar

In a new series on Seattle Boutique Blogspot called "Tried It",  I'll share my most intimate, Seattle-centric beauty adventures with you! Put your seatbelt on and get those ear muffs ready, because this is going to get personal.

In this edition, we cover sugaring. It's one of my latest beauty obsessions because it's a total timesaver. Translation: I don't have to shave every day. As per usual, I didn't dip a toe into this new beauty adventure. I went all the way. In this case, that means full Brazilian at Sugar Sugar on Green Lake.

An alternative to traditional waxing, sugaring is a method of hair removal that uses all-natural and organic sugar. The sugaring paste is water-soluble and can be used over and over on different parts of your body. After the treatment, the entire ball of sugar is discarded. No more strips. No excess waste.

Not only is sugaring better for the environment than waxing, but I've been told it hurts less. While I've never had traditional waxing done, I have in fact been sugared a few times now so I can tell you that it hurts, but not as much as you might think. In fact, I found that the sheer anticipation of the pain was way worse than the actual sugaring. The women that work at Sugar Sugar are incredibly efficient, which means that each treatment is super quick and before you know it, you're a hairless wonder. The results speak for themselves and not having to shave every day has been priceless, especially during the summer. Expect to pay around $75 + tip for your first Brazilian service and then $55 for maintenance appointments that are scheduled within five weeks.

Sugar Sugar also stocks some great skin care lines including Serious Serum, which is a Portland-based beauty brand. Founded by Shannon Conley of Urban Waxx, this vegan product was originally developed to help prevent and treat ingrown hairs after wax treatments. The product uses alpha hydroxy acid (AHA), green tea, chamomile and aloe vera to soothe skin and can be used on the face, bikini area and even on your under arms to battle ingrown hairs. So whether your wax or get sugared, this product is a must-have. I'm a big fan of Serious Serum and use it on a daily basis. I like it even more now that I know it's from the Pacific Northwest.

1. Take Tylenol at least 30-minutes before your appointment to take the edge off.
2. If you're really apprehensive about your first treatment, use a numbing gel with at least 5% lidocaine to help take the sting out. Sugar Sugar sells a product called Numb-It, but you can get it cheaper on Amazon if you plan ahead.
3. Avoid ingrown hairs post-sugaring by exfoliating in the shower, using a serum with AHA and keeping the bikini area moisturized.

The Stock List: Moorea Seal

Seattle boutique Moorea Seal is definitely one of my favorite Belltown boutiques. Located on third avenue between Vine and Wall street this shop is literally a Pinterest page come to life. Stocking great brands like Fresh Tangerine, Herschel, Pine + Boon, Baleen, Dolce Vita, and Quiet Clementine, you're sure to find something you can't live without. Plus, with a full range of price points, you won't have to break the bank.

Color, texture and graphics come together perfectly in these great bags from Moorea Seal. If you wear black all day these bags would be a great way to perk up your outfit. Shown above: Bags from Anna Joyce, Pine + Boon and Karu.

In-store it's grid-layout galore! This is my favorite way to view merchandise, but I'm also a classic Virgo, so this comes as a surprise to absolutely no one. Shown above: Coin purses by Pine + Boon, Les Femmes desk calendar with illustations by Garance Doré.

If you get excited about accessories, Moorea Seal will be your new go-to shop in the city. They even show a little local love by stocking Seattle brands like Fresh Tangerine. Shown above: Brass Jaspar Cuff by Cities in Dust, Weiland Spike Ring by Shadow House, Gold Doppler Earrings by Cities in Dust, Raw Stone Drop Earrings by Leslie Francesca, Thistle Pendant by Shadow House, Louise Necklace by Dream Collective.

And guys, we've got you covered. Moorea Seal has a small, but well-curated selection of merchandise for men. May we suggest a bottle of Rainier? Shown above: Herschel Little America gray backpack, Triangles wall-mount bottle opener by Fluffy Co., Unisex leather cap by Karu.

Add the perfect final touch to your outfit with a Zodiac necklace by Shadow House. These delicate gold-plated necklaces (shown above) feature zodiac constellations in sparkly pavé stones. Or, if you prefer more of a statement piece, the Cauld Collar is a must-have.

And last but not least, for all the little things  in your life that you need to keep track of, how about these adorable little bags? P.S. These make great gifts too! Shown above: Cowhide Coin Purse by Primecut, Punched mini pouch by Pine + Boon.

Summer Hair from A-Z with Sassoon Salon

Make the most of stylish summer hair with this A to Z guide from Sassoon Salon.

A Summer Refresh

Beach Waves To achieve a tousled beach wave, use a large barrel curling iron and alternate the size of each section for a more natural result. Be flexible with the sectioning by starting underneath and working up to the cheekbones, leaving out the ends for that loose, tousled, beach wave look.

Curls Even if your hair isn’t curly, protection products, such as Davines Sea Salt Primer will ensure your beach waves are artfully disheveled rather than frizzy. Products for curly hair are often designed for ‘air-drying’, so no heat-activation is required to define texture.

Disheveled There is something irresistibly seductive about perfectly textured hair that is ruffled and disheveled for that effortless carefree look.

“Lift each section out from the head and smooth through with a paddle brush before ruffling the hair with a texturizing product such as Sebastian Drynamics,” says Lisa Rowell, Seattle’s Creative Director.

Evening glamour on vacation.

Play with the shape and leave the hair soft and teased in places for some simple elegance. Try not to overthink the look, the hair does not need to look perfect, yet should have the feeling of delicate femininity. “Wisps of hair that escape around the hair lines only add to the simplicity and flirtatious feeling of the look. Use a minimal amount of product - it’s more sensual,” advises Lisa.

Flight Plan To keep your hair from drying out mid-flight, “apply one pump of Kerastase Elixir Ultime through your hair before you board,” advises Lisa, “It will soak into your locks without leaving it greasy, guaranteeing you step off with hair that looks super, sleek and glossy.”

If you’ve had a pre-flight blow-dry, twist your hair up into a loose bun and secure with Bobby pins or loosely with an invisible band, to maintain the body and movement. Nobody wants to step off the plane with flat hair.

G is for glow

H is for haute hair

I is for Illuminate

J is for jetset....in style all summer long

Knot it. If you’re not a fan of covering hair with a hat, tie long hair into a knot at the nape of the neck. Keep short hair slicked back behind the ears and opt for a headscarf to keep in place.

Luster

Moisture The key to sexy beach hair is great condition! If you plan to spend a full day in the sun, apply an intensive hair mask, such as Kerastase Masque UV Defense Active. The mask will seal in moisture, while the style will complement an effortless beach look.

Natural Texture. Swap the perfect blow-dries for a messy, loose finish on vacation this season.

O is for Ocean.

Plait itBraid it, a fail-safe way to vamp up your daytime look. For a contemporary look, stop the braid at least two inches from the end, and tie with an invisible band. This style is super versatile; wear the look clean or deconstructed. Use texturizing hairspray for long-lasting yet flexible hold.

+ PRO tip: After every dip, rinse out salt water and chlorine with fresh water, and then reapply a sun protection spray. Rinsing the hair will limit impurities from penetrating the hair cuticle and protect the hair’s moisture.

RepairKeep hair shiny and healthy – pamper your locks with a deep-conditioning treatment once a week.

S is for Sun, Sea & Shine.

Treatments. Healthy hair gets its strength and shine from a combination of proteins and vitamins, just like our skin. Your hair needs customized care to help keep it healthy, radiant and supple. Thankfully, at Sassoon Salon, our experts will recommend the perfect treatment – our treatments deliver a host of benefits to dry, parched hair – from boosting the vibrancy of your color to preventing future damage and instantly smooths and strengthens each strand.

Utterly Gorgeous Summer Hair.

Visit the salon before jet-setting away. Sea water can lead to split ends so plan to visit the salon for a trim, a haircut will keep the ends healthy and super shiny.

W is for gorgeous summer waves

Turn off the heat. Air-drying hair will prevent breakage and cuticle damage, which maintains softness and combats frizz.

Yellow Blondes turn yellow, brunettes go brassy and red heads fade quickly. Keep your color – with Davines Love Shampoo and Conditioner that will lock in color longer and leave your hair lustrous.

Zone – out and RELAX
